SELECTING A WINNER IN THE GRAND NATIONAL

  • loads of Runners: With about 40 horses in the race you can surely expect a spectacle. That’s a lot of legs! It’s quite common to see riders falling and horses running without jockeys.
  • Long track to navigate: 4.5 miles
  • Jumps & Balance: Runners with tendancy of falling are not likely to have confidence and to maintain their balance to have a chance of victory.
  • Stamina: This is a long race – so horses with no track record of victories on tracks over 3 miles in distance are more unlikely to win on a 4.5 mile track.
  • The race is synonymous with the racehorse “Red Rum”which was trained on the beaches of Southport and went on to win 3 Grand Nationals, capturing the nation’s hearts.
  • Each way betting – placing an each way bet on the grand national is an easy way to make profit, as bookmakers pay four places on each way bets as standard
  • It is uncommon to find a contender in the race with such short odds that you won’t make a profit with an each way bet, should the horse place 1st-4th.

Day 2 at the Cheltenham Festival

February 25th, 2011

The stand-out race of the second day of the Cheltenham Festival is The Queen Mother Champion Chase which historically dates back to 1959 when it was originally called the Champion Chase. At this inaugural event Bunny Cox rode Quita Que to victory. In 1980 it was renamed as The Queen Mother Champion Chase to mark the 80th birthday of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother and widow of George VI.

The Queen Mother is also honoured as the patron of the National Hunt Racing and throughout her life, even after her 100th birthday, she continued to attend the Cheltenham festival every year. She even owned and managed several of the national hunt race horses.

The Queen Mother Champion Chase is a Grade One steeple chase which is done over 2 miles at Prestbury Park on the main race course there. The horses who run in this race need to be over 5 years old and during the race they have to jump over 12 fences.

Age has little to do with the betting trends in the Champion Chase and the last five winners have been between 5 and 11 years of age. Generally the favourites for winning have had two wins already in the race and horses ridden by Ruby Walsh or trained by Paul Nicholls have all won three times at The Queen Mother Champion Chase.

You can get the best betting odds for the Cheltenham Festival on betting exchange Betfair. They even give new customers a free bet.

Tennis: Rafa Nadal Earns Grand Slam

September 14th, 2010

Tennis betting fans won’t be surprised that today Spanish tennis pro Rafael Nadal won the Grand Slam Monday after defeating Novak Djokovic in the 2010 U. S Open men’s singles final.

Rafael Nadal is generally thought to be the world’s finest clay-court player ever – having earned an unrivalled 81-match clay court winning streak which ended in 2006, however his domination by winning the Roland Garros French open (the greatest clay-court tournament) for 4 years in a row (2005 to 2008) says it all. Rafa is one of the most popular players for tennis betting fans.

Neither the New York rain, which had seen the final postponed on Sunday and then interrupted for almost two hours on Monday, nor Djokovic could halt the Spaniard’s persistent march to the one title that still eluded him.

In the year 2006, Nadal showed the entire world that he is a strong player, when he played his way to the final of the grass-court Wimbledon Tennis Championship, where he lost to Roger Federer – nevertheless in 2008 he defeated Federer for his first significant success on a non-clay surface. Not one to relax on his laurels, 2009 saw Nadal win the Australian Open and get to the semi’s of the 2009 US Open. 2011 will probably be another epic year for Nadal’s tennis results
